Activities:

Let’s learn to name, make the sound for and print the letters: Gg, Jj, Ll, Xx, Kk, Vv, Zz, Ww, Qq and Yy.

  • Practice naming, making the sound for and printing the letters: Gg, Jj, Ll, Xx, Kk, Vv, Zz, Ww, Qq and Yy. At this point, your child has worked with the whole alphabet so you can practice printing and sounding out all the letters!

Let’s learn to sound out and spell vowel-consonant and consonant-vowel-consonant words (e.g., in and can).

  • When reading with your child, encourage him or her to read simple two-letter words like in, on and up, as well as simple three-letter words like bat, cut and met by him or herself.

Let’s learn to recite (not sing) the alphabet.

  • Recite the alphabet with your child without singing the alphabet song. Try clapping your hands between each letter to prevent slipping into “song-mode.” Also, ask him or her to start saying the alphabet beginning at a different letter than Aa (e.g., Ll).

Can your child consistently:

  • Name, make the sound for and print the letters: Gg, Jj, Ll, Xx, Kk, Vv, Zz, Ww, Qq and Yy.
  • Sound out and spell vowel-consonant and consonant-vowel-consonant words (e.g., in and can).
  • Recite (not sing) the alphabet.

Did you know?

Now is a great time to introduce a ‘letter sound challenge’. Display a letter of the alphabet, and see how quickly your child can produce the most common letter sound. This practice helps your child develop ‘automaticity’ – the ability to produce the appropriate sound without much thought in response to seeing the letter. Spend more time practicing with letter sounds your child finds more difficult.
